Guitar truss rod: single and double action
Просмотров 103 тыс.8 лет назад
This video shows how single and double action truss rods work.
Power tube going wrong: how it looks and sounds like.
Просмотров 78 тыс.9 лет назад
I first heard some cracklings and then saw this. Those Electro Harmonix EL84s came stock in my 2012 Maz18nr. After 2 years of almost daily practice and a few gigs, one finally gave up on me. A new pair and everything is back to normal.

    Howdy. My suggestions. 1. Parasitic oscillations. Check the EL84's grid stopper resistor. If there are none, inserting grid stopper resistors is highly recommended, Try values between 1k to 8k6. 2. Check biasing (mentioned below). 3. Leaking EL84 grid capacitor. Solder disconnect one lead and check the resistance with a multimeter. I have had two cases brand new cap.s leaking. Flippin' difficult to diagnose. Eventually I checked DC voltage levels around the end tube and observed the grid voltage being way off. Regards.

    Tube amp tech here.......... I know this is a vintage video... BUT... notice how there's a purple color in the tube on the left??? It leaked air, and lacks enough vacuum to function correctly. Not going to bash EH tubes... it can happen to any of them. Sometimes there are quality issues, but overall they've been OK in my experience, IF they are run within their operating parameters.

  • @bretfuzz925
    @bretfuzz925 6 месяцев назад

    Check screen grid resistors. Then check/set bias. If still red plating one, get a new set of tubes and bias them properly.

      @@331b7 Thank you! I'm putting together a partscaster for a customer at the moment and guess what? The truss rod operates BACKWARDS! It's only the 2nd or 3rd such truss rod since I've been working on guitars.. I can't think why they do it? The neck I'm pretty sure is from the Far East and it's cheap(ish)... It's not a major problem so long as it works, one way or another :D

    Just remember that if you replace your tubes, the amp needs rebiased unless its a Mesa with Mesa tubes.

    Thankyou SO MUCH!!! I have a Jackson JS22-7 with back-bow on the neck, and have the truss rod fully loosened and it still hase back-bow. I didn't know it has a dual-action truss rod! I will be trying this out today after work to see if I can fix the back-bow. I am so excited! It is a restoration project guitar. Everything else about it is great - just the back-bow that is annoying! Thankyou again for your video mate. Have an awesome AWESOME weekend!

    Too much plate current into tube, you can damage the output transformer and then you'll be in much bigger trouble than just replace a failed tube

    It seems over plate current, may be the resistors of the grid have prpblem. Any way, the tube cannot be used any more, as the plate burnt red hot, sound quality will be much deteriorated.

      I'm pretty sure that's a solid state amp. A few things could've gone wrong, a fuse might have blown, or a capacitor popped. Keep it unplugged and you could open it up to see what might be going wrong, just don't touch anything in there. Otherwise I'd say take it to a tech or see if yours has a warranty.

    Возможно, там не контачил 2-й штырь - 1-я сетка, поэтому не было смещения. Perhaps the 2nd pin did not connect there - the 1st grid, so there was no bias.

    Thanks for a superb video! My arch top is a single truss rod and I always wondered what the difference was. So for low action I gues I need to tighten (clockwise) the single truss rod a bit.

    Don't run an amp when output tubes are red-plating, you could burn up your output transformer

  • @SteveOLive88
    @SteveOLive88 3 года назад

    My first guess would be the bias isn't set right, that will cause it to draw too much current and red plate. My second guess would be something is shorting out causing the tube to draw too much current. These are just guesses though I hope it helps

    I had that issue today, with my 6v6 power tubes in my 1 yr old Princeton. 1 was as bright as a orange and a soft burning smell started. I noticed the issue cause my sound kinda halved. I wiggled and reseated all the tubes and it went back to normal. I don’t feel it’s the end of i, so just holding my breath.

    • @331b7
      @331b7 3 года назад

      Hope this solved the problem. Be careful though if it does it again. A tube failure can damage other components in the circuit. You might also have a bad solder joint (the wiggling.) Have a tech check it?

    Hi, can u tell me what kind of truss rod is inside the Gibson Hummingbird?

  • @jakefoxx7978
    @jakefoxx7978 3 года назад

    I'm guessing the rod in my Squier jbass is a two way seeing as how it doesn't come out when you loosen it to the max. Kind of sucks because I can't tighten it beyond its limit when I need to in order for the neck to be straight again (it's warped like a banana, concave). I could be facing more than just truss rod issues since the action is also uneven and the warp is only from about the fifth fret to the first. This wasn't the case until about a month after some freezing temperatures took over a week in Feburary. Basically since the first day of spring I have been dealing with a dead sound compared to the brightness it once had when it was new. Even after getting lighter gauge strings, having it setup by guitar techs, and meddling with the saddle heights it still looks and plays blandly. The technicians basically solved half the problem, although I have yet to adjust the truss rod to be certain of that. After all, I did tell them what happened and waited two weeks for results 🤷‍♂️ but it sounds about as good as it once did just bent like a skateboard ramp.

    @1:06 Yeah, that is what we called tube "cherrification" back in the day. That sucker's ready to pop! EH tubes are known for that. Good ol' Sovteks or JJ's here would be a better choice. Still I'm surprised the EH tubes lasted 2 years of daily use.
